Course Objective

1.Explain the typical structures and the properties of very common engineering materials and the relation between the material’s internal structure and its properties. 2.Describe some of the very common material processing techniques and comprehend how an engineer can achieve a desired property by controlling the structure. 3.Select a suitable material for simple engineering applications.

Course Content

Introduction and classification of materials; Atomic bonding in solids; the structure of crystalline solids; diffusion and rate equation; mechanical properties of metals; failure; physical properties of materials; electrical, thermal and magnetic properties. Corrosion and degradation of materials.

Learning Outcomes

Students apply materials science principles to understand a general picture of the nature of materials and the mechanisms that act upon, modify, and control their properties.
