Course Objective

1.Explain the principles of phase equilibria that allows the construction and interpretation of phase diagrams. 2.Comprehend the relationship between thermodynamic principles and phase equilibria. 3.Consider the development of equilibrium and non- equilibrium microstructures and their effect on material properties.

Course Content

Phase diagrams of materials systems. Geometric relationship and thermodynamic fundamentals. Phase relations in uniary systems, binary isomorphous systems, and binary systems containing invariant reactions. Ternary systems; projections of liquidus and solidus surfaces, Alkemade lines, compatibility relations, ternary invariant reactions, paths of equilibrium crystallization, isothermal and vertical sections. Applications .

Learning Outcomes

Students apply basic science and materials science knowledge to the ceramic related topics.
