Course Objective

1.Explain the concept of standardization, national and international standard steels and their designations with examples from ASTM, SAE,AISI, DIN etc, mechanical properties of steels and related microstructural characteristics, aspects of application of steels, integrated iron and steel plants vs. mini steel plants and steel products, the concept of clean steel and clean steel production technologies. 2.Select steels according to different application fields and different mechanical property requirements. 3.Write up technical specifications and/or evaluate acceptance tests for structural steels, high manganese austenitic steels, tool and die steels, stainless steels and HSLA steels. 4.Compose flow sheets or setting up steel plants for the production of specific steels.

Course Content

Importance of steel: modern technological developments in the steel industry; clean steel production techniques; ladle metallurgy; continuous casting technology,. Classification of steels: structural steels; HSLA steels; dualphase steels; tool steels; high manganese austenitic steels; stainless steels. Steel selection process: selection according to properties. Hardenability and selection according to hardenability.

Students apply materials science and thermodynamics to the specifics of steel related topics.
