Course Objective

This course aims at providing the essential background for metallurgical and materials engineering students for understanding fundamental concepts of surface processing. The main emphasis will be on correctly specifying the requirements for the application and then making the process selection using several industrial examples. The course also aims to give an idea about the principles of process choice.

Course Content

Introduction to services and interfaces, structure and properties of interfaces. Different coating methods. Surface processing techniques that involve chemical and physical changes; special surface treatment techniques. Surface processing selection and controlling surface quality.

Learning Outcomes

After succesfully completing this course the student will be able to 1. Describe the basic fundamentals of surfaces and interfaces. 2. Explain the different types of surface processing techniques. 3. Specify the requirements for various industrial applications.
