Course Objective

This course has three objectives: 1. to discuss different methods for the synthesis of nanomaterials and nanostructures; 2. to highlight the principles of different techniques used to characterize these materials and structures; 3. to evaluate the effects of nanostructuring on the mechanical, optical, electronic, magnetic, and chemical properties.

Course Content

Introduction to nanometer scale materials; visions in nanoscience and engineering. Different techniques of synthesis for nanostructured materials; synthesis of nanoparticles, nanotubes/nanowires, nanoscale films and bulk nanoscale materials. Characterization of nanostructured materials by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopical techniques. Properties of nanostructured materials.

Learning Outcomes

The goal is to achieve an understanding of the basis for the novel properties of nanostructured materials and a perspective on contemporary research in nanotechnology.
